How an Air Source Heat Pump Works

An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and concentrates it to a useful temperature for your heating and hot water. It works on the same principle as a fridge running in reverse, and it works even when it's cold outside, there's usable heat in the air well below freezing.

The key difference from a boiler is temperature. A gas boiler typically runs flow temperatures around 65–75°C in short bursts. A heat pump runs much lower, often 35–45°C - for longer periods. That's why it pairs so well with underfloor heating, and why radiators sometimes need resizing: a lower flow temperature needs more surface area to deliver the same heat into the room.

It also changes how you use the system. Heat pumps work best running steadily rather than being switched on and off around a timer. Most people adapt to it quickly, but it's worth knowing before you commit.

Is Your Property Suitable?

The honest answer is that it depends, and anyone giving you a firm yes or no without seeing the property is guessing.

Good indicators

  • Reasonable insulation - cavity walls insulated, loft insulation up to current standards, decent glazing
  • Space outside for the unit, with airflow around it and a sensible distance from neighbouring windows
  • Radiators that are already generously sized, or underfloor heating
  • Room for a hot water cylinder if you don't have one
  • Currently on oil or LPG - the running cost comparison is far more favourable than against mains gas

Things that need addressing first

  • Solid walls with no insulation
  • Single glazing or significant draughts
  • Small radiators sized for a high-temperature system
  • Very limited outdoor space
  • No practical location for a cylinder

None of this list is necessarily a dealbreaker - plenty of them can be resolved as part of the work. But they change the cost and the timeline, and you should know about them before you commit rather than halfway through. That's what the heat loss survey is for.

Why MCS Certification Matters

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme sets the standard for renewable installations in the UK, and it's not optional if you want the grant - a heat pump fitted by a non-certified installer doesn't qualify, regardless of how good the workmanship is.

MCS also requires the installation to be designed to a defined standard, with the heat loss calculations documented and the system registered on completion. In practice it's the difference between a heat pump that's been engineered for your property and one that's been sized by rule of thumb.

Running Costs - The Honest Version

Heat pumps are often marketed on running-cost savings, and the reality is more nuanced. A heat pump delivers roughly three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses. But electricity currently costs substantially more per unit than mains gas, which narrows the gap considerably.

In practice: replacing oil or LPG, the savings are usually clear and immediate. Replacing mains gas, the outcome depends heavily on how well the system is designed, how well insulated the property is, and what electricity tariff you're on - a heat pump-specific tariff makes a significant difference. A well-designed system in a well-insulated home can be cheaper to run than gas. A badly designed one in a draughty house will not be.

We'd rather set that out plainly than promise savings we can't guarantee. At the survey we'll give you an estimate based on your actual property and current usage, not a national average.

A room-by-room calculation of how much heat your property actually needs - the foundation of the whole design. Typically takes a couple of hours.

System design

Heat pump sizing, radiator or underfloor requirements, cylinder specification, pipework and controls, all documented to MCS standard.

Written quote and grant paperwork

Itemised, with the grant deduction shown. We handle the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application.

Installation

Typically a few days depending on scope. Outdoor unit, cylinder, any radiator changes, pipework, electrical work and controls.

Commissioning and handover

The system is balanced and set up properly, and we take you through how to run it - which matters more with a heat pump than with a boiler.

MCS registration

Registered on completion, with your certificate issued.

Heat Pump Servicing

Heat pumps need an annual service to keep running efficiently and to keep the manufacturer warranty valid. We check refrigerant pressures, the outdoor unit and its airflow, system pressure, the cylinder and controls, and review actual performance against the original design. We service heat pumps we didn't install as well as our own.

Heat Pump or New Boiler?

We install both, so we're not the wrong people to ask. For a well-insulated property with the space and the right emitters, a heat pump with the grant applied is often a genuinely good decision. For a solid-wall property with small radiators and nowhere sensible to put an outdoor unit, a modern condensing boiler is usually the better choice today - and there's no shame in saying so. The survey answers it properly.
